Little owl with new lens
One of my first shots taken with a newly aquired canon 500mm f4 ,although i have borrowed one in the past ,nothing beats owming your own.
Having only used a 300mm f4 previousley its certainly a different ball game with a 500mm more so with using a tripod with it ,however i am going to enjoy my time with it as it does give me a lot more oportunties with these birds (and others ) ....Canon1d mkiv 500mm f4 at f4 iso 800 =1/3 ev 1/320 sec tripod mounted.

Hi Den
Every time you put one on it seems to be better than the last.
What to say about this ? Does for me all the way. Nice use of a big perch- nice lookn from the bird- and you know whats coming now-would be nice in my opinion with a bit more blurredy stuff in the back
No big deal. Every body seems to be getting new kit- I,ve gone back to my D200 !!
Cheers
John

Congrats on the news lens. I started out with the 300 F4 myself. I love your choice in composition here. Love the perch and your BG. I think the owl's face could use some more sharpening.

Loverly image design and BKGR. As I am not a fan of the sawn off perch log a cop from the bottom might improve it. How does the BKGR noise look to the rest of you? a

Starting to see a little noise at 4:1, but not too bad in my humble opinion.

Congrats Dennis on your new 500 lens, you'll love it. I am distracted by the noise throughout the BG, would you be able to clean that up, a bit more selective sharpening and crop so the butt end of the sawn log isn't so prominent? All suggestions from above which i believe will make this image terrific!

Yes a lot better Den. A bit of something in the Bg would improve it even more in my humble opinion.

The crop and the noise on the repost are much better. From the get go, I have had the feeling that the owl looks cut out... Did you do anything after selecting the bird or the background?

Hi, not sure what you mean by cut out ,what i did in the re-post was import the image in to photoshop CS5 .
I did the crop in photoshop ,i then used the laso tool and selected the bird only then inversed, then added neat image NR to the background only ,nothing else...hope that makes sense

By cut out, I mean that it looks as if the bird had been cut out of another photo and added here. What it means here is that your selection process was a bit on the sloppy side and that you failed to feather the selection... Both as I suspected.

Hi Arthur, i have edited my original post ,mainly because i actually thought you were implying that i had copied my image on to another background and after reading again ,it appears that you say it looks like it ,however my PP skills were sloppy etc....not my strong point in this case

Hi Dennis, As you figured out, I was not thinking that you had cut and pasted the bird. Your somewhat sloppy selection process made it look that way. Note that nobody else noticed this :)
I would advise getting a copy of my Digital Basics file.
