This beautiful male painted bunting sang his heart out and stayed close to the bird blind, where i was trying to be hidden. However, this curious guy would "visit" and would perch from time to time a few feet away. This opportunity came when he flew up and under the shade of a tree and gave me this gift. I chose to expose him a half stop under and in process bumped back up. By choosing this exposure, I noticed the sheen was lessened but not completely gone.
There are two separate breeding groups in the United States and this fellow was in Texas and belongs to the Western population. After breeding season they migrate back to Mexico and South America.

Wow, these are some eye popping colors. Wonderful blend of coloring in the bird as well as the background. I like that the bird is completely in front of the perch and singing pose an added bonus. HA is good and a wonderful sharp eye. If you can, I'd suggest a little more room on the right, the beautiful bird seems just a bit pinched in the frame to me. That's 2 winners in a row for you from Texas, a very worthwhile trip.

Wow, those are some wild colors this one has! Good job getting so close and getting good detail, light looks a little harsh. Background goes good with this bird.

Ann, I think your bunting is giving my Rainbows a run for their money!

Goo detail in the bird and great BG compliments the bird! I hope he has a nice song to go with his beauty.

Love the colors and the IQ looks great.
I would like a little bit more room all around if you have it.
The eye is oh so clear and the singing pose killer.Perfect HA. I also like the spider web abd the fork in the perch. Adds somee good lines to the image,
    Gail

A wonderfully colorful species with a nice singing pose and a good exposure. Too tight all around especially in front of the bird. I several problems with this image that did not concern others above: the harsh (somewhat off angled?) light has caused problems, especially the specular highlights on the side of the breast. The RED channel there and elsewhere on the bird is toasted. Lastly, the image quality and the feathers of the face are a mess... Most of these problems would have been eliminated had you been blessed by a cloudy day. When working in bright sun you must be right on sun angle or the image will suffer the consequences. a

Thank you Artie for your critique. The bird was tucked amongst branches and i thought the shade of the leaves would help. Nevertheless, some of the reds are toasted and there are burnt areas throughout. further, I agree that the crop is too tight but chose not to include an intersecting of brown branch, perhaps not such a good choice. Would you please be more specific about the image quality/mess of feathers around the face? Any suggestions for that area or wait till a cloudy day for the next one! Thanks again, Ann

Ann I have read with interest the other comments and think you have done well getting what you did, I'm with the others re more room but getting the singing pose and some super colours makes for a very good effort.

You are most welcome Ann. Thanks for being open :) The feathers just in front of the eye look extremely worn. And the harsh light did not help them. A cloudy day would be perfect. Below is a small crop of the face of a pretty much perfect male for comparison. a

Thanks a bunch for locating this head shot for my comparison. Now i really can appreciate the harshness, the smudginess and "messy" feathers round top of beak and where the lores are, etc, ... Toasted feathers on such a beauty is an injustice to this amazing technicolor. I am now on painted bunting "alert" so i can try again. Thanks for all you do for all so many... Ann
