    Default Hyena Cub Grooming Mom

In the last rays of light this hyena cub decided it was time to turn the tables and give mom a bit of a bath. Taken in the Timbavati Game Reserve on our 2014 trip.

    C&C welcome and appreciated. Thanks,

    Dear Rachel,

You made my evening with this - thank you! Love the light, perspective, composition, colours, great IQ. Love the tenderness of this scene.

Nice DOF, great emphasis on the little one doing his bit to make Mom comfortable. And she does look comfortable! Such a tranquil and happy family picture:)

Well exposed and sharp where it matters. Love the catchlight in the pup's eye. The shadow ends in just the right place and what beautiful light falls on the subjects - makes me think of a stage...So well seen and captured, this is superb Rachel - congratulations!!!

Warmest regards, have a wonderful evening,
    Gabriela Plesea

The light falls perfectly here, Rachel.
Nice moment and tones. I would consider a square crop, lopping off space on LHS?

Hi Rachel -- Beauty of a light ! I loved the tender moment along with the details that you have managed to bring out . I too will opt for a square crop by cropping out the LHS .

    TFS !

Beautiful image I like the crop and the processing. It's the first time I have seen an adult hyaena look attractive!

Thanks Gabriela, Morkel, Haseeb and Jon. Yes, the square crop is an alternative but I like a bit of negative space.

    Thanks again,
    Rachel

Hi Rachel, now I'm back I thought this could wait before commenting.

I would try the square crop or 10x8, as presented then a hint more below I feel. Nice light and I like the interaction, although I feel the soft BKG is a bit too smooth and appears to tail off in parts more than others especially to the left??? I would now with hindsight want more SS as you know.

Thanks Steve. Btw nothing at all done to the bg (not even NR). I think the effect you are seeing is just from the different distances e.g. hill/termite mound where the den was located and then more distant bg to the left.

    Thanks again,
    Rachel

Hi Rachel, sweet, sweet light, and love the warm colours. Hyena's are under estimated as good subjects, and you have brought that out nicely in your image. Good DOF, the details is there. Apart from having more space below, I would leave the comp as is.

Thanks Stu. I have to check if I have more room below. I don't think so though.

    Thanks again,

    Hi Rachel

Adore this scene filled with cuteness and love.
Sweet light, like shallow DOF with FP on the little one.
Know you prefer the negative space, IMHO a square crop would be too tight.
    Tried a 7x5, WDYT?
    Regards

    Andre.
