    Default Northern Flicker (Yellow Shafted)

While returning to my car in a local wildlife preserve the other day, I passed a stand of Cedar trees. Hidden in the branches was this Northern Flicker who launched out and flew to a nearby Juniper tree.
It was enough of a distance that I thought it might make a smallish in the frame image. C&C welcome.

    D4S, 1/1000s, f 6.3, ISO 1600, Gitzo tripod, Wimberley Gimbal head.

Very nice Geoffrey. I like the composition you chose.
I like the very visible spayed tail feathers and the nice head turn. Nice to see the hint of yellow in the tail.
Nice clean BG and the perch shows the environment very nicely.
I see a bit of sharpening artifacts around the head. I wonder if you should increase the exposure by a third- looks a tad dark but that may be the light conditions as you saw it.
    Nice photo!

Hi Geoff, a nice small in the frame image, and nicely placed high in the frame. Good pose showing off the colours, and I do like the distant OOF BG.

Thanks very much Gail. I did the slightest bit of sharpening and contrast selectively on the whole bird. Just checked the original file and appears to be the same quality, before the subtle increase in sharpening and contrast. This doesn't mean your keen eye isn't seeing artifacts. It was late afternoon with a slight overcast.
