Posted just for fun. I think I am getting that look.

In ACR - Highlights all the way to the left and shadows increased.
In PSC6 - BG painting and cloning. Bit of eye work. Bit of dodge and burn. Curves adjustment over whole image. Smart sharpened for posting.

Great!! Bit of a blue cast in the darks but maybe that is the bird's color?? Wonderful BG work!

Good job filling the frame, looks like great focus and detail! I'm loving these guys! Keep it up!

Glennie: An "unorthodox" pose that I like because it seems the bird is staring right at me - very engaging. I also like the diagonal lines of the branch matching the bird.

When you said "Bit of eye work". can I assume you are blowing up to 1:1 size and then ... what exactly are you doing in the eyes? Eager minds with no PS skills want to know .......

Diane - Thank you. Yep. I can see the blue now. He is black and white, not bluey black and white. I fixed it on his beak with a tiny HS layer. I see it on the top of his head now. I hope you're not run ragged with your Grandma duties, and cat stroking duties!

Andrew - Thank you. Eye Work. This is probably different things to different people, but this is how I see it. The eyes, to me, are the most important part of an animal (or person) image. For my birds, if they need it, PP may include "dodging" the iris, "burning" the pupil and enhancing the catchlight. Maybe a tiny bit of darkening around the eye itself. For this Butcher bird, I've also enhanced (darkened) his eyebrows to give you "that" look. And don't forget to focus on the eye most importantly. If the eye is not sharp, no amount of PP work can make it look better.

Very nice pose, Glennie. I like this pose and the BG work is very well executed! f/8 is on my wish list but I am content with this DOF as well.
