    Default Hovering Pied Kingfisher

I thought I would post a different image of a Kingfisher, as this fellow hovered scanning the water for his next catch. As they hover fairly high up, most times you end up with a sky BG, but here, I positioned myself to have him against a distant OOF mountain.

A finely focused image Stu, unusual background offering a monochrome appearance.
This may just be me but as I go around the bird all is smooth but around and right and inside the bill I get the impression of a very fine saw toothed edge.

Stu, I like the almost B&W effect. His head is well defined from the right wing with it's wonderful upswept primaries. The composition is great with him looking down. I can just see the saw tooth that Jonathan mentioned.

Thanks Jon and Glennie. Here is a repost sorting the issue.

What a magnificent bird, here we "only" have the blue and orange common kingfisher. So with the overall effect of the image, I thought at first sight that it might be a b+w photo.
And I agree with the others, the monochrome effect is really nice.

The bird itself is, to my eye, very nicely in focus, with a perfect pose which I haven't seen too often from Kingfisher photos yet. I can only imagine the difficulty in obtaining such a shot.

    Many thanks for sharing!

Beautiful wingspread and DOF effectively pulls the head from the right wing. I like the details in your sharply focused image and the almost but not quite monochromatic colors are really nice. The rp fixed the sawtoothing, it took a sharp eye to even see it in the first place.

Lovely photo Stu, beautiful BG and nice pose. I prefer the second post. Did you lighten the eye a bit? I find it has a little bit of a googly/goldfish feel to it, which may be a result ... but could just be me. There also seems to be a bit of a haze around the neck but that may be my eyes :). Thanks for sharing and hope you are well!

Hi Stu, nicely framed, well executed, like the almost monochromatic look & feel to the image.

Stu you have caught the hovering pose spot on,I was thinking how this bird would look on some of those magnificent BG you have posted in the past, the repost just takes it up one.

    Good one Stu!
Love the color of the BG. Suits the color palette of the bird really well.
    Good IQ.
The far wing seems to be "hazy" and not just because it is out of the DOF. Would a levels adjustment on the far wing help to give it more pop?
