    Default Golden eagle takeoff

The golden eagle is a keystone species in the Bighorn Basin of Wyoming. We have a very healthy breeding population.. For my upcoming book on the basin I need some good coverage of this species. I knew that the golden eagle has a powerful wing stroke to get airborne so I framed this bird in the verticle to have room for the wings.. Probably would have clipped them in the portrait format. What amazed me is I didn't freeze the wings at 1/1250 shutter speed...

Great pose and setting. The wing blur was what I was wondering about, too. I'm not even sure it would have been frozen at twice the shutter speed. I'd love to see this species in the field someday.

Great position, the upraised wings and extended feet draw attention to the power of the bird. Eye contact couldn't be better. I might lighten the shadow of the one wing on the other; there is also a slight sharpening halo where the dark outlines meet the sky in some places, easy enough to cure with Smart Sharpen, using the advanced shadow/highlight settings to roll off the highlights of the sharpening to cure the overshoot.

Awesome action you captured in this image Dale and I particularly appreciate the background info because it gives me tremendous respect for his incredible power to get airborne. His wings were really moving to still have wing blur at 1250. Thanks for sharing this wonderful image. No nits for me !!

Very effective photograph, with lots of impact - love the hanging talons. I would be tempted to crop about half of the empty space above.

Love eagles. Nice capture. I really like the incorporation of the surroundings. Would actually like to see a bit more of it with a horizontal crop. Just don't feel the vertical framing works best for this wing position. Speaking of that I'd have loved to see a vertical shot of the wings fully stretched towards the sky. That would have been amazing. A bit too centered for me also....feels a bit crowded side to side and perhaps a bit too much room on top. Like the outstretched legs and the eye contact is nice. The heavy shadows are a bit distracting as well. I really want to see more of the undersid wing detail. Still...it's a dramatic eagle shot and that's a good thing.

Very effective shot, love the pose, it is surprising about the wing blur to me as well:cool:

They are very powerfull birds. I only saw them twive in Europe, so it is very nice to see a really good picture of this species. I'd be tempted to crop a bit of the top
