Last one for a while. Whilst the birds have been plentiful, I am still struggling with the light. Image taken 3.25pm, overcast.

The birds look good for colour, but the BG has let the image down. The BG is my garden, with lawn (and fallen yellow leaves) and the white is a concrete driveway and then the bushy native garden. I think my next venture will be working on studio for the BG.

Diane - Once again, I have found nothing that useful in ACR. The smaller image and histogram is "as shot". In PS worked on BG only...which now, I think is way overdone.

f9 - to try to get both birds in focus. Which I think has been relatively successful.
ISO 1000 - To try and get the SS up
1/80 !! I whistled at the birds to get their attention....and it worked. They were still for that 1/80th of a second.

Glennie, this is wonderful!!! Sharp, colorful, amazing poses!! And amazing work on the BG! I wouldn't call it too much! The bottom has less detail and might stand a slight gradient darkening. (I'd just do a Curves adj. layer and pull down the middle.) Great job of masking.

Exposure looks good in this case -- if you overexpose by a stop you will really have a low SS (1/40) so here it's a good compromise. And yes, in some cases you don't need much adjustment of a raw file, especially in soft light.

Is it possible to move the perch higher or lower to get a better BG? And/or to move yourself so you are looking more up or down to have a more even BG?

Although its good to get close, you will get a narrower view of the BG if you move back more and go to a longer focal length -- I see in the insert you were just under 300mm.

I want to see more of these guys!!! If your winters are like ours, some days will have a little light.

Wunderbar! This is a really excellent image, Glennie. I agree with Diane, the BG is not overdone. Good job on the f/9. I think that really helped when you worked on the BG (you can mask out the birds and perch better because they are sharp).

Wow, love this one, the colors, that cool perch, nice work fixing the background. I like the light on this, give me that over harsh sunlight any day. I know a lot of your pics will probably be blurry at that slow ss, but if you get even one like this, it is worth it in my opinion!
