This is not a pose I am particularly fond of, but thought he was cute enough. I was trying f8 today for a bit more DOF, but I think the trees in my yard are just too close. Autumn comes and goes quickly here. The BG is mostly a persimmon tree changing the dark green leaves of summer for the gold and yellow of autumn.
In ACR - increased exposure, decreased highlights, decreased whites a little. In the HSL Panel, knocked off the oranges, yellows and greens.
In PSCS6 - HS layer for BG. HS layer on branch. Dark brown under perch cloned out. NR on BG and smart sharped for posting.
Canon 5D2
Sigma 150-600mm @ 260mm
f8 @ 1/500
ISO 1250
Tripod
Spot metering (I have been using mostly evaluative)
C&C Always welcomed and appreciated!

Wow what a beauty! what specie is this? I have never seen one like this. You did a great job fixing that distracting looking background in the original. Is there a section on this site that explains what all the acronyms are? looks nice an sharp. what is smart sharped? looks like it works good. ~MT

Beautiful bird. What bird is this? I think the color tone on this one is lovely and judging from the stripes on the wing(?), I think you handle the blacks much better on this one, Glennie. For my taste, I would prefer a tad more blacks. The crop is excellent. But I do think the eye is a little over sharpened. The detail on the breast though is exquisite. It looks sooo cuddly and fluffy.
PS. What is HS layer again? Highlight and Shadow? I think you did an excellent job making the BG not as busy.

Glennie, Awesome Shot. I like the bird a lot. can you let me more details on the bird.
The Bright light on the branch on which bird sits seems to distract me a little. I would also love to see the bird in much more cleaner background like light color of green leaves etc.
Awesome details on the feathers which stands out.
Thank you for sharing...

Cute pose and great details in the feathers. I would vote for toning down the branch in places a little bit, the BG doesn't give me any issues since the colors in the bird compliment the colors of the BG.

I'm gonna stop commenting on Glennie posts as there is almost nothing wrong with them at this point ....... beautiful bird, is this a Crested Pigeon?

Species is Crested Pigeon - Ocyphaps lophotes Quite a common little bird around suburbia as well as the bush.
Michael - Thank you. Scroll through the ETL forum - There was a post from I think, Jess McKenzie that outlined all the acronyms. "Smart sharped"! Ha. Should be smart sharpened. This is the final thing I do before post here. (Bird only)
Adhika - Thank you. Yes. They are a very delicate looking little bird, but quite fiesty. They have black bars on their wings. Adhika, no work on the eye, just the final sharpening process. HS Layer - Hue-Saturation layer.
Krishna - Thank you. The bright spots on the branch is lichen, but I can tone down.
Warren - Thank you. Yes. I think toning down the branch will work.
Andrew - Thank you. You are most kind. Yes, crested pigeon.

Now I have another way of making busy background more friendly! Thanks for sharing, Glennie!

I'm late again -- but this is just gorgeous!! I love the cute pose! Great BG work. The weathered perch is the perfect color -- eucalyptus?
There is a lean toward blue/magenta here but I don't know the bird. I think it's attractive anyway.
If anyone can find the acronym post I'll make it a sticky, to stay at the top of the thread. Great idea to have a handy reference.
Otherwise I'll start a list and stick it asap.

Thank you Diane. Yes, decaying eucalyptus. I am a bit excited. I have rainbow lorikeets starting to visit my perches!
In the RAW file there was a lot of magenta. I took it down in PS, but too much seemed to take the colour out of it. It is naturally a pinky, grey colour.
Here is link to acronym list:- http://www.birdphotographers.net/for...8-Acronym-List
PS. WELCOME HOME GRANNY!

Thanks Glennie -- I edited it and made it a sticky so folks here can find it more readily, I hope.
Magenta is usually (for me) best dealt with by the Temp and Tint sliders in the raw conversion, but it takes some practice to learn to see in time. How are you removing it?
Thanks for the welcome home -- good to be home but we can't wait to go back down in about 10 days! Meantime I'm editing almost 1000 pictures. Talk about the challenges of wildlife -- almost all were ISO 1600 to 3200 at f/2.8 in low light, and mixed light -- indoors with some window light. Try working on that on a new baby's skin!
And low shutter speeds using a lens without IS. Thank goodness for back button focus and AI servo, which lets me switch between AI Servo and One Shot (to recompose while holding focus) instantly.

Diane, I'm using the HSL sliders in ACR and then if I think it needs it, in PS as well.
Can't wait to see some more baby (wildlife) photos! I think we need another forum!) I've been making photo books for my Chasey every year. (well, 3 anyway) I still haven't got used to the back button focus. I should practice.

You might try a comparison with using the temp and tint sliders first, but a cast is usually subtle and the difference between the two may not be huge. I try to tackle issues as close to the cause as possible rather than fixing symptoms.
You're quite welcome to post baby people here as well as baby birds!!

Post a Thank You. - 1 Thanks
