Michael, the light is extremely beautiful here! And the subject is a pretty bird. I really like the play with reflection here. I think you get the tonality right and the water movement adds so much to the picture. Maybe a slight CW rotation?

Lovely!! I though a slight CCW rotation so maybe you've hit the median value. I'd crop from the top about halfway to the head.

I'm on a laptop and can't be sure of the sharpness, especially of the head. How does it look to you at 100% in the original file? What was the focal length? That lens is remarkable sharp at 400 and even with a 1.4X. Is it a crop?

Oops, CCW! Something is not right with my head today. Must be all those fried chickens!

Michael, lovely duck, nice water. I really like the blues and tans. Agree with the CCW rotation. It looks like the bird is swimming away, but has given you a backward glance. I would also take a slice off the top, and clean up some little dark spots in the water just to be picky!

    Well done!

Thanks for the comments everyone! I will try the CCW rotation . Diane, it is cropped, but a little more from the top wont make too much difference I guess. I would like to get closer, havn't had too much luck yet with this species. Lots of sharpening needed, my raw files never seem to be really sharp, though they are much better with the new lens. It may be my old 7D is wearing out and needing replacement soon.

The 7D2 is a considerable improvement. The AF system is more sophisticated, too.

Thanks! I might have to consider that as my next camera soon... I have heard good things about the focus and fast frames, but does it produce sharper images? (with all other factors being equal, skill of operator, light, lens, etc...) I also like that it will work with a 1.4xlll !

I haven't used the original 7D so can't compare sharpness. A post in the Photography Gear forum would get you some information. But from what I've seen, the images are cleaner, with less noise, which is as important as sharpness, which is more a factor of the lens. And your lens has great sharpness, even with the 1.4X.

I've been using the 7D2 almost exclusively with the 100-400 II and getting very nice results at ISO 800 or lower, even with some very large crops. I'm not delighted with ISO 1600 and it gets worse above that.
