    Beach Stone-curlew (Esacus magnirostris)
    South coast, NSW Australia

    Nikon D4 | Nikkor 500mm f/4 | 1.4x TC II | Boogie board with Jobu gimbal
    1/800 | f/7.1 | ISO 560 | 700mm

When a solitary Beach Stone-curlew was drawn to a local beach by the emerging Soldier Crabs it provided some wonderful photographic opportunities. I set out to get a shot of the feeding behaviour which, unlike the Eastern Curlew that first snips off the legs before swallowing the body, involves 'chugging' the whole crab down legs and all. This image shows the bird and crab just before the 'chug'.

Another nice low angle shot. Nice light great IQ and nice crab too. The body angle is a bit awkward and for this reason I like the image even more. Maybe I'd give some more room around it if you have. Nice work.

I would agree with Lorant there re space around the bird.Great shot with prey though. Similar to our stone Curlew.

Excellent light, details and I like the small crab. The composition is good as is but I'd tone down the highlights just a tad

Beautiful Mat. I have seen these birds only once, at a little beach just north of Brunswick Heads, NSW. Being a threatened species, this would have been a real treat to photograph. It certainly is a real treat to view it here!

    TFS!

Killer look at the bird and its prey! Would prefer a tad more room, esp on top.

Great-looking frame. It has almost all the components of a perfect Frame. Great light, Pose, prey item, Beautiful background and Nice details. Got a love of this one.

I looser comp would be beneficial here IMO, but I love the low angle, sharpness, colours. My favorite part is the "I surrender!" pose of the crab :-)

Thanks to all for cc's and I must admit I agree that the looser crop works better here. Arash I played around with the shadows and highlights settings, pulled some more detail from the whites and settled on the warm tones for this version.
