I almost never try to make "small in frame" images, mostly because I rarely feel like the background it not appropriate for such images. But for this one I actually liked the mood it created so I decided to give it a try.
Taken back in 2014. It is actually the first image I ever took with my then newly acquired 500mm, right after selling my 100-400. Kind of funny that I finally get a bigger lens and the first thing I shoot is a small in frame image!
Canon 7D, 500mm I + 1.4x II, f/5.6, ISO 400, 1/1250.
The small size of the plover is well exhibited in this image and the DOF contributes well to a dream-like feel. The bird could do with a little more sharpening as it looks a bit soft to me. A very pleasing image overall.
The background works really well here. Good body and head angles to get that light coming in from the right. With the subject so small in the frame I think the image would work quite well with a bit less canvas at right.
