    Default Lake Erie sunrise

Sunrises on Lake Erie sometimes last for a long time; this was about an hour and a half after official sunrise. If you're wondering about the things on the horizon . . . On the extreme left is Kelleys Island. One of the interesting features on the island is long, deep grooves that were cut into the rock by advancing glaciers. Farther toward the center of the image is one of the ferry boats that goes back and forth between the island and Marblehead, Ohio. That's how most people cross. Maybe not so much anymore, but some folks used to drive their cars across the frozen lake in the winter. There's also a small airport on the island. It's strictly for small planes, and there are stop signs on the road that goes by it with signs warning drivers to give the rightaway to aircraft landing and taking off. On the right side of the horizon is an ore boat anchored at the conveyor that carries limestone from the quarry in Marblehead.

The dramatic clouds and the vivid combinations of colors in the sky remind me of Turner painting...just beautiful. I love the rays of the sun shining through the clouds. Doubly impressive since you captured the image with your iphone! Having grown up in Ohio (and spent a lot of time on my dad's boat in Lake Erie), I also appreciated the historic context into which you placed the image.

Hi, Dennis, the clouds and sun rays are outstanding. What a beautiful way to end your day. The backstory is especially interesting. I'm not sure I'd want to drive on the ice

The most amazing color for the sun being that high! Great clouds and suitably dramatic treatment -- I love it!

Dennis: You do wonderful work with your iPhone!

As others have said, fantastic sky and sunrise. Wonderful sun rays coming out of the clouds. The inclusion of the ore boat, pier, machinery in silhouette grounds the image, gives it a sense of size, adds interest and tells us something about this lake.

I'm not so keen on the water--not sure if it is the colors (especially the green) or the choppiness, or what. I think the horizon is slightly off--maybe a clockwise rotation.

Love the story about the airport!

Wonderful sky, wonderfully processed. The ore boat adds an interesting touch and helps balance the glory of the sun's rays in this composition.
