    Default Fine details (5Ds R)

Finally got a chance to try this body with a few local subjects. Check out the fine details, it showed me stuff I hadn't really seen before. It's a bit slow for my liking and is no low light champion, but when the light is right it can pull a lot of details

Not bad Arash! I am tempted to put the 5dsr on a 600 in good light, there's lots of coots down here to practice on!

It is my firm belief that motion blur with the 5DS R, the 5DS, and the 7D II, is more of a problem than with other camera bodies. Why? With their higher pixel pitch movement of the subject covers more pixels... I know that many disagree, but I am basing my thoughts on what I have experienced using the 5DS R for several months. I did not even bring my 1D X to San Diego. I will however, be getting a 1D X II for flight and action to complement my two 5DS R bodies. I have posted a few 5DS R images on BPN recently and their are dozens, many with extreme blow-ups, on my blog as I used my 5DS R extensively in Japan and 100% of the time in San Diego. a

In addition to the small pixels that are more prone to blur, it looks like the 5DsR shutter/mirror mechanism isn't really optimized for continuous shooting like the 1DX. I find it really difficult to make photos that are tack sharp to my liking below 1/100sec in single shot mode and 1/200sec in continuous mode even using my wide angle lens (16-35 f/4 IS). With the 1DX and my 400 DO II, I can get tack sharp photos down to 1/200sec hand held while I found that I need to be at least 1/800sec or faster to achieve pixel level sharpness consistently with the 5DSR.

    Hi Arash,

Concerning the 5dsr pixel count and its problems with blur, have you considered using a deconvolution based sharpening method? Maybe something with more iterations than one would usually get from PS Smart sharpen etc? I would be very interested in your view on this issue.

    Cheers,

    Gerhard

    Hi Gerhard,

PS smart sharpen is actually based on deconvolution, in Photoshop CC it's even adaptive. unfortunately no amount of sharpening can resolve the detail that was lost due to motion blur. It reduces the effective resolution of the camera, but then again, Canon made this camera as a studio tool...

Thanks for the info Arash. I am still using CS6 and smart sharpen may not be as adaptive as in CC. When using smart sharpen in CC, what are your recommended settings? Can one dial in the number of deconvolution iterations and blur kernel size for instance? I have been using Astra Image as a PS plugin recently and am pleasantly surprized at the improvements one can get on a 7D11 generated image in terms of blur correction.

    Hi Gerhard,

with PS CC's new method I use radius 0.8 pixel and amount 150-250, you can't really adjust the kernel details though.
