Hi Marie, just a quick note when posting an image:
    - You can post a bigger size i.e. 1200px wide x 1000px high, posting larger helps the image & the viewer to compile feedback
    - Include the Camera, Lens, SS, etc (Exif data) this too helps the viewer - I've added it for you
    - Any background to the image and issues in taking it, i.e. behind glass, chain fence etc...
    - I have added a (C) in the title as it's captive

If you haven't already, take a minute to read this:
    http://www.birdphotographers.net/for...and-Guidelines

Finally, when posting images for the web, the image requires that you change the embedded colour profile from RGB to sRGB, in this way the image will be fit for purpose and you will not have colour shift within the image. If you need help, let me know. Likewise you can increase the KB of the image to retain good IQ, posting here is unto 400kb, again if you need help shout.

To the image, it's quite a nice shot of 'The King' and I think having the open mouth adds to the portrait. The colour also looks quite good, but there appears to be tinges of green and magenta coming through in the mane which I think is from your processing. The patchy BKG is a bit messy, however in a zoo you cannot control this as much as in the wild. If this is cropped, then I feel you need a bit more space above, it's a wee bit tight. Not sure what is creeping in on the RHS on the trim, but if you can I might clone that out.

Just my initial thoughts hopefully others will chime in to. I might suggest you also think about posting in ETL too.

    TFS
    Steve

Hi Marie - Welcome to the Wildlife Forum! Steve has covered posting and the critique well. I too like the side portrait with the mouth slightly open. You have nice detail. Yes, the bg isn't ideal but shooting in zoos can often be difficult and movement of the photographer just as limited as movement of the animal. I would prefer a bit more room around and with the 100-400 you could have shot it a bit wider.

It would be great to get your thoughts on other people's wildlife images too. We recommend posting comments on 3-5 other wildlife images each time you post one of your own. This allows us to all learn from each other and helps to become a part of the BPN community. The more one participates in the critique process, generally the more one gets out of BPN. Your comments don't have to be technical in nature. Just tell us what you like or don't like about the image.

    TFS,
    Rachel

A warm welcome to BPN from me too, Marie Elise

Beautiful lion - my first thoughts when I opened the thumbnail were: "Wow, he hasn't got a scar on his face!". Lovely pose and indeed there's something so noble and majestic, so king-like, about him. I am certain he would have fathered a great number of cubs if he was free:)

Marie, you received lots of feedback already, so I have little to add. So here are just a few thoughts: I think you have a good image to begin with, good techs, some nice shutter speed. The lion looks sharp to me although a tad oversaturated in terms of colour (I am referring to the yellows at the tips of the fur/mane). I bet there's detail galore in your RAW image, I am now looking at a couple of things like the nose (spots visible), fur on the chin, that lovely mane. It would be great if you could try preserve that detail - especially in places like gums, eyes, nose - by applying your changes (exposure, levels, curves etc.) only where needed.

I am sure everyone would appreciate it, if you could describe your processing steps and software you use - then we can all chip in with more suggestions. Please do not get discouraged by our comments and critique, we are all here because we love feedback and advice from each other. I personally would love to see a repost from you of this lovely lion, if unsure then let us have a jpg version of the RAW?

Thank you so much for sharing, looking forward to more from you!

Don't forget to comment on our images too

    Kind regards,
    Gabriela Plesea
