    Joe:
Mandarins have to be one of the most beautiful ducks. We used to have one locally at our bird sanctuary, and he was a stunner.

The preening pose shows off his crest beautifully, glad we can at see a bit of the eye (lids really, but it gives the effect).

I might try to move him off center just a bit. I like the ripples, so can see why you centered him, but would still prefer him moved to the left a bit in the frame.

The green water has given the bird a subtle green cast, worth removing.

Lower shooting angle would have been nice, but probably not possible at that location, unless you wanted to wallow around in the goose goo.

    Cheers

I would have wallowed in the goo for a lower shooting angle if I had a chance to photo one of these.

Thank you Randy and Dan for viewing and commenting. I'll throw this out regarding a lower shooting angle. If I had gone lower then the top of the head and the crest would not show as it does from this perspective. That is what I really was attracted to, when he turned his head just so I thought the crest and feathers on both sides of the neck were gorgeous.

The head feathers are certainly the stars of the show here...almost literally an explosion of colours! Well exposed and sharp. I agree with Randy's critique and suggestions. After having this image in the bank I would have wallowed in the goose goo too.
