    Default Red Grouse (F)

Not an 'earth shattering' image, as this female Grouse suddenly stopped in the Heather, but I just love these warm rich tones in their plumage, great camouflage and perfect for when you are concealing yourself within the habitat.

Taken on the same day as the male, so light wasn't great, but a reasonable result for ISO8000 and the 2x converter.

Thanks to those who viewed or posted a comment on the previous thread.

Brilliant detail Steve. Especially at that ISO and the 2x. Lovely DOF and colours throughout.

    Nice one

    Steve:

Rich yet subtle colors and details make this for me. Nice eye highlight, soft bg, but enough there to add depth.

    Effective shooting angle.

I often find the females every bit as beautiful as the males in many species, just more subtle!

    Cheers

Exceptionally beautiful portrait, Steve. Once again, lovely soft light and fine detail.

Nice processing at iso8000. The eye appears a bit soft to me, but otherwise a well composed portrait.

    Thanks guys.

Dan having the 2x converter on only provides one central focus point sadly, which I think has been rectified in the 1DX MKII version. However i just looked and the FP is just on the curve of the cheek feathers. So not bang on the eye as I would have liked, but at f/8 enough sharpness there IMHO .

Looks good on all counts Steve. OK, maybe not "earth shattering" but these types of portraits (especially when well done as here) always catch my attention and I love to create them whenever I get the chance.

Another wonderful grouse portrait! Those multiple shades of brown look great. ISO 8000 and 2x make it even better

Excellent portrait. I'd be inclined to darken the dark areas of plumage just give a bit more contrast and 'pop'.
