I got the chance to take the 7DII out for a higher ISO test drive the other day, and I was pleasantly surprised. OK, the light was not half bad and the subject is white, but still...for a camera that is unusable at ISO 800 (I read that somewhere on the internet) it performed at a level acceptable to me at ISO 3200. To note, I did not perform any scientific tests, nor photographed charts and stuff...only a real world bird photography situation.
Canon 7DII + 500mm f/4 II, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/2000s., f/4, ISO 3200, cropped a bit more than my usual (from 5472 pixels down to 3678 pixels on the long side), NR to the coloured parts of the BG (I could/should have applied it under the wing and tail too). Owl fed.

Quite impressive, great light, exposure spot on. Beautiful bird, magnificent eyes. I have found with my D7000 (and I would expect the same with your 7D II), get the exposure correct or ETTR and the camera does fine. Under expose and noise will make most images unusable. Thank you for sharing, Daniel.

I love that in your face look at this girl and the details look great. Those eyes are just awesome. Joseph is right in the sense that you need to get the exposure perfect with the 7D, it can make a big difference in the outcome of the shot. A little underexposed and it does get pretty grainy. Nice frame Daniel

P.M. me to inquire on dates, pricing and availabilities. Thank You. www.davidsalemphotography.com
excellent frame Dan, it demonstrates the value of right exposure in the camera. I might run just a bit more NR in the darker areas under his wing and face. that perfect eye contact is priceless
Hoi Daniel love this in your face head on shot !!!!
Well performed by man and his tool , yes push that Iso .....
Nicely processed with a good details where it counts and i like the well controlled whites .... not to forget the stunning eyes .
Agree with the noise in the underwing
Well, after being sucked in by those killer eyes, it took a while to wander around enough to see the remaining noise, but it is a pretty strong example of how dependent noise performance is on exposure and the tonality of the image.
Amazing, i am astonished about this Result.
if you compare for yourself: how much worse is the sharpness to an ISO 400 Image from the 7D2 ??
Hi Eric, I'm glad you like it! I was impressed with the amount of detail retained at this ISO. More noise than ISO 400, of course, but no significant loss of sharpness. I took some cardinal images at that ISO too, and impressed with those too... All in all I am quite happy with it.
wow...unbelievable performance. 7D MkII ISO 3200. great shot from this beautyful owl.
question: with an "normal" case or special settings? i'am work with the same equipment.
Wilhelm, remember, the camera also has to work harder the closer the subject is too, so it's not just 'Case' settings that you need to think about here.
That works too, everyone's got their personal "sweet spot" as far as settings go. I just got the camera and only begun exploring this new-to-me AF system...pretty cool how customizable it is. Anyways, all that to say that I'll likely tweak the settings as I get more familiar with their workings. No matter how precise the camera is, if you can't consistently keep the focus points on the subjects you will still miss the shots most of the time :-)
