I have 2 versions of this image. One with both bits of grass in the image and one with only one bit of grass.
What would you do? Feel free to take the FF image into your PP and crop to your liking!
I will post the original file in the next pane.

    Gail:

Interesting one re: crop. For me, not being able to see the eye changes some of the rules of how to crop it. I think your 1st pane is fine, and I tried a vertical, just the left grass clump and bird in ~ 4x5 crop. That seemed a viable option as well.

Do wish I could see the eye.

Sharp, nicely exposed, great POV and bg.

    Cheers

Hi Gail, I am with Randy with a 4x5 crop vertical with just the bird and the grass/vegetation to the left. I took the liberty of trying different crops with your image. Above is how I would crop. Thank you for sharing.

Hi Gail, I would try only one crop at the bottom just above your name just to minimize the band of OOF sand at the bottom. Some OOF sand at the bottom is pleasing to me and I like both sprigs of grass. Interestingly, when landscaping, three trees or shrubs in a group tend to be more pleasing than two ; I believe the human eye just sees three as more pleasing than two. I would be curious to see a sprig of grass just to the right of the Plover for a total of 3 sprigs. If only the bottom is cropped, the plover remains in the middle of the frame but that doesn't bother me at all. You could crop the left to shift the bird slightly to the one side. I am sure that you have already considered these options but thanks for the opportunity to consider possibilities.

I think your choice of crop works well. I like the little green vegetation and I thought it would change the way I'd crop it and place to bird to the let side more, but I think the center position works better. I also like the vertical crop of Joseph. Very nice image IMO and I don't mind not seeing the eye.

Hi Gail lovely preening shot of the plover . I love the overall color and tone palette a lot .
    Nice work .
I think i would go , as another option for a wider view and tend to use pano .

Of your two images, I prefer the first cropped one. If it was mine, I'd try to get a bit wider and not have the bird so centered. Then I saw Andreas' version and really like what he did with it. Well, there you go. Almost as many opinions as replies.

Hi Gail, love the IQ, light and feather detail in this. Good DOF and nice and sharp too. I liked the contrast in the BG on your previous image, and still like it in this. Im presuming both images are from the same shoot. Comp wise, before scrolling down after your 2nd image, Andreas has posted exactly how I would have cropped it - maybe with a touch more room on top.

Interesting choices and responses, Gail. Personally I like the OP, but might crop a wee bit off the left and add same on the right, cloning out the oof grass and it's shadow.

I would agree with Andreas on the crop. Great looking image Gail, nice lighting which shows the feather detail perfectly.

I really like this image wide, Gail, with both pieces of vegetation. From their, it's personal taste. Maybe a tad more of a crop from the left (as per Pane 2)

I like the OP. the small vegetation provides a nice reference for size emphasizing the delicate chick. Sharp with good details
