Default More details about the 1DX MK II

I conducted an interview with Chuck Westfall about the features of the 1DX II. The most attractive feature for this community is the new AF system. It has increased sensitivity plus ALL 61 points remain active at f/8. This should help with very long focal lengths as well as with lightweight lens combinations such as the 400DOII+2XIII.

Arash, Thanks for the blog post when he says the new sensor has greater photo-electric conversion efficiency I am assuming he is talking about on chip ADC which should improve low ISO noise resulting in cleaner shadows and increase DR or as Canon is referring to it increased latitude just wondering if you pursued this further in your questioning. I know Andy Rouse is saying that the beta version he tested has clean shadows with increased DR as well as clean high ISO files with ISO 32000 now usable to produce commercial quality images. The images he has on his blog are pretty impressive even for web sized files at ISO 10,000 and 32000 http://www.andyrouse.co.uk/index.php?b=1

    Hi Don,

He is talking about improved quantum efficiency of the sensor since it has a new color filter (the color filter normally absorbs some light reducing quantum efficiency) , this would help in low light conditions. The ADC would be the peripheral circuit which he doesn't mention, but it could also have changed although that would require a sensor re-design which would be a major point for marketing to mention.

I should get one soon so stay tuned for the review.

Canon Europe is really pushing the new sensor design and improved shadow noise in their promotional material http://www.canon-europe.com/for_home...image_quality/ and on chip ADC is mentioned here http://www.digitalcameraworld.com/20...n-review/#null and an interview here with a Canon rep also mentions a new sensor with on chip ADC http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zMhvISTvTY. Not sure why Canon USA is not promoting a new sensor as actively as Canon Europe. Looking forward to your review they are always well done.

Arash, just sent you a link from Canon which you may or may not have seen, as you need to keep drilling down each section, all looks very interesting, wonder if other competitors will bring out C/Fast cards , sadly I can only see Lexar?

Personally I just wonder if the touch screen is more a 'gimmick' and more to go wrong, rather than a really good feature, but lets see. As I say, I'm hooked, but it appears that May seems favourable for 'estimated' delivery at present over here, but early days.

As Don says, they are really pushing things over here, I wonder if it's because we pay more in Europe compared to the US or how CND operate?

If you're going to be serious about video, then the touchscreen is really a requirement. For stills, I agree, it would be a "gimmick."

not true, other manufacturers have been making CFast card before Lexar

Shortly after writing the reply Arash, I found what I wanted - SanDisk CFast 2.0 Extreme Pro
The issue is the overall cost, I think I need to ask someone across the pond to ship one to me as the prices look more favourable.

    UK costs
    64GB - $372
    128GB - $654

    Cheers

    Don,

Regarding the rumors about different ADC design, Chuck mention the technical documents of the EOS 1D X Mark II do not mention such aspect.

He is checking with product engineering in Japan in case something was missed. I will update the article if it turns out to be true. So far it is not confirmed.

you pay for the latest and greatest Steve, if you don't need 170 RAW buffer (that's like 12 seconds of shooting at 14 fps!) I'd stick with the good old CF. I use Sandisk extreme pro UDMA7 and with the 1DX I have never ran out of buffer

Thanks Arash, Here is another hands on review touting the incredule AF and noiseless shadows. These are mostly marketing pieces for Canon Europe written by Explores Of Light so they all tend to be a bit enthusiastic but it does seem that Canon has produced one heck of a camera if these reviews turn out to be accurate. http://rudgr.com/tag/canon-1dx2/

Hi Don I must say this guy has no idea what he is talking about. he says "From first glance I would go as far to say that 1Dx2 Jpeg quality easily exceeds 1Dx RAW quality." He just doesn't understand the basics, a JPEG file is a processed, sharpened and compressed 8 bit image. While a RAW file is 14 bits raw sensor recording, it has to be converted to a TIFF or JPEG first to be compared against. His sentence is meaningless to put it mildly.

Given the comment above I would dismiss whatever he says.

Also, there isn't really much to be improved on top of 1DX in terms of image quality. What I was personally hoping for was a ~28 Mpixel sensor with the same high ISO performance but they opt'ed for faster frame rate instead and probably a bit better high ISO from what Chuck told me.
