    Default Barn Owl in habitat

Another Barn owl shot, this one took me by surprise a little as I was looking for the short eared owl to make a close pass. However, I'll take a barnie for the second prize!

Light was starting to go, but these birds are just beautiful to watch.

A real beauty Mike! I like the loose composition, setting, sharpness and exposure control.

Indeed they are Mike, but this is where you have a trade off, lows SS but the reach of the 7DMKII, or 5DMKIII and add the 1.4, I know the direction I would take and the image would be better I feel.

    Nice one.

Looks nice despite the fact that the shutter speed is slow for BIF.
I like the background but I would cut the top to eliminate the bright spots from there.
Only about 1cm to be cropped from the top.

    Cheers Steve,

Having bought the 7d2 as an 'action' camera I have been trying to get the most testing I can with it, but have come to the conclusion that whilst it did well in the Florida light, I find it wanting over our side of the pond. I'm always a little disappointed viewing its images after a shoot, and they need far more work than the 5d3.

Just wondering now whether to sell it and switch for an older 1d4 for the odd time I need the speed over the 5d3. I've seen clean images at ISO 3200 with the 1d4.

    Thanks Karl, good suggestion.

Mike, the weather here, especially in recent weeks, has been awful, and ISO is you best friend on this side of the pond with the poor light. I think you may find you are in a similar boat with the MKIV, albeit that the 7D is more recent. I would push the ISO on the 5D, Will has found this out and is getting more keepers and better images. Next time prise the 1Dx out of Jon's hands and see, but the 5D will deliver.

Hi Mike. I like the image. I think it is well presented and the comp looks good. Love the detail on the owl against the BG.

I sold my 7D Mk2, and bought a 1d4, just for the reasons already mentioned. I found that unless its really good light, the 7D2 didn't perform on my 500 lens. And, I dont get 'good' light very often, so I am glad I traded it in. I find the 1d4 is better than the 7D2 , for flight shots, but the light has to be fairly good.

Hi Mike, I love the dark tones of the BG vs. the light tones of the bird. This is quite a beauty of a shot. I think applying NR to the BG only can bring it up a notch or two.

I had it for almost five years and then traded it in for a 7D Mark II.
Then I bought a slightly used one again and I'm happy with it.
Also have the 5D Mark III and the 7D Mark II but use the 1D Mark IV most of the time.

A really good picture for me !! Owl and BiF that is fascinating, everytime !

Yes the 7D II: in good light a good camera, i like mine as an extender, but more than iso 400 could be tricky. so its only my backup cam.

i was a few weeks ago stupid to sell my 1DX and by a 5DsR.
50MP is great, but it is not the right camera for wildlife, ok for controlled conditions in a hide with slow objects, it will be great.

so i was very glad, that i could change it back.. now i have sold my 50 MPix Monster and get back an used(but still in good conditions) 1DX ;)
