A portrait shot taken of a Stone Bush Curlew on Kangaroo Island, South Australia. Curlews are endangered in areas of human habitation on the Australian mainland but Kangaroo Island still has a sizeable population of these curious birds. They are mostly ground-dwelling and prefer open scrub and grassland to forage. Canon 7DII, EF 300 IS II + 2XTCIII, 1/2500, f6.3, ISO 800. handheld. Cropped and PP in CS6. Comments welcome.

Nice portrait and plenty of details showing. Good smooth BG too

The light seems to have been coming from above and that protruding brow has cause the eye area to be in shadow. Brightening that up and the chin/ lower bill should be easy enough and bring this image up another notch

Gerhard might try to brighten that lovely eye a bit if you where so inclined , you have loads of fine sharp detail and a nice clean BG all on a good clean Bg,good work thanks for showing us this.

Brings back memories seeing your post, we stayed on Magnetic Island Queensland which had a good population of these birds, one used to poke it's head around the apartment door and listening to there calls at night was magical.

Nice portrait, but I find that the background is too bright. I reduced the yellow only in the background. Of course it is all personal taste and you might not like it this way.

Hi Gerhard, I love this portrait, the details and the shadows which reveal contour. I also vote for a brighter eye, and bringing down the saturation of the BG a notch to taste. You may also consider applying NR or blur to the background.

Gorgeous portrait! And nicely detailed for being handheld. At first I loved the BG but do feel toning it down a bit is good, maybe halfway in between the two. Although it may not be to everyone's taste, I tend to go for a soft contrast look, and would be interested to see a comparison with more movement of the Highlights and Shadows sliders in Adobe Camera Raw (assuming that was you raw conversion step).
