Default Purple Sandpiper with Slipper Shell

Spent a wonderful couple hours yesterday with a small flock of purple sandpipers, one of the shorebird species that I don't have many pics of. They were foraging for food at the base of a jetty. This is my fav from the morning. Struggled with low light, but the camera was up to the task. Slight crop for comp.

A fine shot Grace, these little angles can be either very obliging or entirely the opposite, if the image is cropped I may be tempted to loosen it a bit, the bird is just a tad large in the frame for me. (I appreciate the surroundings may have necessitated this crop).

Lovely image of a bird I have no images of. I like the shell pile and the behavior captured. Techs look perfect. Thank you for sharing, Grace.

Hi Grace, a fun image and although I see what Jon means, just two little Exposure adjustments to the FG & then BKG avoiding the subject I think addresses the issues and then a slight drop in the blue of the LH rock to a more neutral colour helps standout. If it was me, then I might have added a fraction more DoF and certainly upped the ISO for more SS, no question without any worry of noise, push that camera body.

Lovely shorebird, and I love the shell flooring. I also like the rock wall at right, pretty cool. I do find the large boulder at left and BG a bit looming, but all in all a sweet image.

Fine image of this beauty and habitat, Grace. Wonderful capture especially with a live Snail. Beautiful light and great feather detail.

Thanks for the ideas. I removed the blue in the rock and darkened the shells. What do you think? I personally think that it made a big difference and I thank you for your careful consideration.

Hi Grace, personally I feel it works, although I think we do have to distill from all the feedback we receive and then balance things out.

This was where I was going, just even taking a bit of colour out to help the FG rocks, although it might be too muted???? This is now perhaps getting all very subjective, not only in what we see/interpret, but also how it's presented to us, however some subtle changes can make all the difference. Overall it's a very pleasing image, the subtle tweaks and refinements are now down to personal tastes.

Steve, Thanks for all of your work and interest in the image. I appreciate it and have enjoyed the discussion. I will say that the slipper shells to me are as much a part of the image here as is the bird. They have a beautiful color to them and when they are wet they become even more saturated and almost glow. Pane #10 has no color in them, no life, and they are alive and in turn what gives life to the purple sandpiper. They are as much a part of the picture as is the bird. In that I want people to look at them, enjoy their color, note that there are still critters in some of them, I'll stand by my repost in Pane #8, or maybe even split the difference between my original and Pane 8. (I think that you recognize this by your comment about them perhaps being a bit muted).
Again, thanks for the discussion....made me think !

Hi Grace no problem and yes, a good exchange of thoughts, direction and ideas and this is what I meant in another thread (I think), about distilling feedback. Ultimately you were there and have the grasp of colour and scene.

Thanks for the replies and good luck.
