The lighting was harsh, but I don't get many chances at seeing these little guys. Lots of pruning of twigs and other distracting elements, and a pretty big crop.

Hoping for suggestions to improve it.

    Thanks for looking.

Hi Kent Would try having a little more room all around. The bird seems tight in frame. The base image must have been good since it stood to the crop fairly well.

The one thing that hurts the most here is mixed light. Not much you can do about it, harsh light can be dealt to a point but not this one. Imagine there is no substitute for trying to get close and working some sort of bg.

The PS work is good, it just looks peculiar since you don't expect a lens to produce this type of bg? Objects close to the bird are expected to show some detail or at least a transition !!!

Love the eye contact, bird does look a bit cramped.

    hi Alfred --

Part of the clean up involved blurring the background in PS. Blurred the whole layer and then masked out the bird. Still left unsightly light blurred twigs which I either burned or APTATed away. More room is definite;y needed. thanks and thanks Nonda.

Personally I love the crop - up close and personal is good, more like a portrait. Beautiful bird!
