I finally broke down and bought a Nikon D300 so I am still trying to learn this beast. It always appears that my shots are very grainy after I crop them, even at a low ISO. Any enlightenment on this is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks for looking and comments.

Did you underexpose the image? If you change the exposure in your RAW converter more than a little bit, you add noise. In order to prevent that change the exposure compensation, in this case positive and check the histogram frequently to make sure it's far right but not overexposed. I agree, there should be hardly any noise at ISO 200. Maybe someone who uses the D300 will chime in.

You are correct Axel That camera is noise free at 200 !!! Even at 400 I don't usually have to use NoiseNinja. Can only guess that it was a bit underexposed?

Do check your histogram and make sure there is data in the last box. Zero comp with a dark bg seems reasonable, if it was overcast adding some would have been the norm !!! btw read the manual a few times, lots of features on your new Camera!!! Big Congrats!!!!

btw remember to leave enough room for the virtual tail !!!!
