    Default BISON IN WINTER

The bison is nature's snow plow. I used Topaz Simplify BuzSim Toned III. For me, the clearly visible eye is the highlight of the image.

Great image, Gary. Were the eyes clearly visible or did you clean them up? I like them and the visible nose also.

Cheryl, I did nothing to the eyes. Thanks for the look.

Great catch on the eye! Nice. How close were you?

Hazel, I was in my truck with the bison at 20-30 yards. The lens was a 200-400mm which gave me some zoom.

Best wishes to all for the holiday season.

Great image, Gary. I agree that the eyes are the highlight, but I love the snow packed into the bison's fur coat as well.

Great capture and processing! I like the snow covered fur and the natural eyes.

    Lovely portrait, Gary!

Nice detail, love the pose, this is well framed and such a nice conversion.

Just wondering - did you do any cloning in the FG? Picked up a few repetitive patterns, I could be wrong though.

Enjoyed the overall look and feel of the image, superb eye contact, TFS!

    Kind regards,
    Gabriela Plesea

I am off to winter Yellowstone in a few weeks and very much hope to get an image just like this!! I totally agree the clear eyes make this picture! But the snowy coat totally sets the scene!

Thanks to all for the positive comments. Gabriela, I did add a bit to the bottom. Now that you have brought it to my attention, the repetitive pattern is quite noticeable. The redo is an attempt to correct the problem.

Nancy, bring your long johns to Yellowstone. It was -20 there last night. We spent two days in the Lamar Valley over Christmas. The wolves are active. A great time was had by all. The only down side was the malfunction of my 600mm lens. All of the images captured with the lens are unacceptably soft. The lens was shipped for repair today. Happy New Year to all.

Gary, good job on the bottom edge re-do. And thanks for the temperature report. -20 is really, really cold!! I am very excited to hear about the wolves. Sorry about the 600 ): Happy New Year to you and all!

I like your second post better. Mainly because the one open eye, the right side in frame and the snowy coat makes it seem as if the snow and cold are almost unbearable, it highlights the elements better to me anyway. Did you also lighten the shadows in the coat some? The snow plow hole just below the head is another nice catch. A good B&W image. TFS.

Really stunning image, great detail in the blacks, and the eye contact is marvelous.
