Hi Jon, its the aerodynamic curve of the top of the wings that grabs me in this shot. Great head on capture of the stare ahead too. I do like the soft light, and a great result for ISO 4000. I would still run a touch of NR on the BG.
Jon I'm liking these shots even in poor light, gives the owls a very natural look IMHO,like the uncluttered bg with just a hint of vegetation, see what next week brings.
I think this is my favorite so far even with the flat wing position.
The far wing has enough of a dorsal view and the near wing enough primary curl to mitigate the flat position.

When I first opened it, I thought this pancake pose wasn't going to impress me. Boy was I wrong. This is one heck of an impressive image. Love the pose, the extended wings and the slight flare of the feathers, the wide eyed look and perfect head angle. The BG is killer and I love the grasses framing the image.
I almost never like a flat wing position. Note I said "Almost". This one just rocks with those crisp eyes and graceful ends of the wings. Super image, a pleaure to view.
This one definitely works for me Jon, goes to show you don't always need the classic wings up or down positions. Great stare from the owl and you've shot this from a superb level.
