I found out a bit too late that this relative rarity had arrived, I was struggling here, there was no way could get the light in the right direction, I will try again early morning, this was taken in the afternoon.

Great capture Jon. I really like the pose on the bird and its good to see one in pretty rough waters, I assume this is the sea? Nice detail on the bird and a good HA.

Appreciate your frustration but think you made a great job of what you were presented with. Nice to see the bird in a bit of rough stuff. Good exposure and sharpness. Wish you well in the morning. Unfortunatly they do not get this far east, so don't expect to see one myself.

Jon your bird looks spot on, just enough light on the eye to define it nicely, that rough water looks great.

Great find and nice capture, Jon. Is it the species that has red throat in breeding plumage?

I think you may be referring to the Red throated diver Karl, the great northern (I am advised this is an immature) is a slightly larger bird and lacks the red throat and it is entirely black and white.

    Jon:

I agree it is a immature common loon (your Great Northern Diver). I think you handled the lighting well, and the rough water adds to the story. Such a change from the gentle waters where they usually send their summers.

    Look forward to more.

    Cheers
