    Default Hanging Velvet 2

A while back I posted a photo of a buck mule deer with velvet hanging off his antlers as he was in the process of changing from a velvet rack to "hard horn". As I mentioned this takes place over a very short period of hours so a lot of luck is involved to get the opportunity to photograph this process. The attached photo is the second buck I happened to find last year with velvet still hanging. It was taken in early light before the sun came up and I didn't hit perfect focus but I am hoping the photo is interesting enough to post.

Hi Dennis yes it does look interesting with the hanging velvet and the bloody looking surface of the antlers . I am fine wit the crop as presented .
I would expect a way better IQ for a 1Dx file , but just saw your very short SS you used for this shot i guess you know not ideal with the lens combo .

Have you hit the image with heavy NR as it seems that all fine detail is gone or lost .

Hey Andreas, thanks for your comments. I agree the IQ is poor, it was one of those mornings when whatever was in the air made pretty much everything soft. On top of that, the image was pretty dark and when I lightened it and gave it some NR (ISO 3200) it got worse... as I said I almost didn't post it...

Hi Dennis -- I agree with what you have to say abt something in the air / atmosphere , it does hits the image badly , considering the subject was long way away as u have mounted a 2x tc on the 600mm , did u also cropped a lot ? iagree with what Andreas has to say , nonetheless an interesting behavioral shot .

    TFS !

    Hello Dennis,

I really wish you would share more in this Forum, I find your deer images very interesting and I clearly remember your previous post.

Those antlers appear almost "raw" to me, and I love the innocent/surprised look of the subject... nice framing too:)

SS a bit slow indeed, I believe you could do more in Photoshop...how about adding some "oomph" to this lovely portrait - a mere burn and dodge can make a difference, perhaps some levels or a linear curve, selectively applied?

Just a thought - have you sent your camera/lens/converter for calibration to your Canon dealer? I found it helped a great deal. I am not too fond of converters /extenders and hardly use them, others might disagree but I find that the IQ drops tremendously.

Lovely capture Dennis, I took great pleasure viewing and glad to see more on this species in the Wildlife Forum , much appreciated

    Kind regards,
    Gabriela Plesea
