    Default Disappearing Pixels

I mentioned this little problem of mine to Diane a post ago. I thought the problem was with PS but now I'm sure it's in ACR.

I have uploaded a RAW file untouched except for the crop. No sliders moved at this time. Am I expecting too much with a crop of this size to work well?

After cropping, I thought I might see what a darkened FG looked like. In the second image, I've pushed the Adjustment Brush Shadows slider to the max and the exposure pretty much as well. The result seemed to wipe out pixels altogether. When in PS and a little burning, of course the problem was magnified.

I feel I have pushed the sliders too far?

Any comments or thoughts are much appreciated.

It's hard to be sure without seeing the "before" but it looks like I'm just seeing tonalities pushed together. So maybe you're saying the detail has been lost. In that case, I'd try some Clarity, and it may be you have just pushed too far for the original tonalities in the capture.

It looks like quite a bit of noise, but hard to be sure from the screenshot. That can probably best be helped by Nik Dfine or other NR tools in PS. Good to see you're working in 16 bits.

That is a pretty big crop for anything except the sharpest and most noise-free capture. Not that you shouldn't do ti to get a good composition, but in most cases it would lead to lower expectations compared to if you had been closer and not cropped.

Thanks Diane. What I did discover was an awful lot of "duck weed" floating around on the water. I agree it's a big crop. I can never get close enough! Most of the images from that morning look a bit noisy. I'll try and get out again this weekend.
