Default Great Gray Owl - Bonus Find!

    Attached Images Attached Images

The bonus find is not the owl per say - this image was taken on February 2nd, 2013. The bonus find is the memory card found in a camera backpack pocket that I never check, thinking it is empty. One look at what's in the card before formatting it, and low and behold a Great Gray Owl session that I had never processed! This giddy photographer went right to work on those!

I remember that morning well - everything was covered in hoar frost...the rising sun melted lots of it away as it gave a warm glow to the scene. Yes, that is frost on the owl too

Canon 7D + 100-400mm @210mm, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/250s., f/8, ISO 800, natural light, handheld, FF, some highlights on the perch and BG toned down, NR to the BG.

    Hi Daniel,

What a wonderful find, both the owl and the card.

I really like the perch, and the incredible detail on the face. The frost on the bird is like the icing on the cake ;)

You might consider to desaturate the oranges in the background only (just a tad). They tend to pull my eye.

I went looking for an owl today without much success. It was great to see one here on BPN - Thanks!

Fabulous image, fabulous find. Nothing better than an early (or late?) Christmas present. Owl is great and I love the hoarfrost. BG looks a bit bright to me, even though I'm sure that is the effect of the rising sun. I'd be tempted to experiment with a little darkening. Looking forward to the rest of the card.

You took this beauty not long after Marina and I paid you a visit! Love the contrast between the warm light and the bitter cold. Nice shot!

    Perfect in every possible way.

Can't believe you went through the images of that day without thinking "I vaguely remember being 30ft from a GGO but can't find any image"..... 210mm

How cool is that to have found these images on a forgotten card!! Don't you just love it when that happens. The light is sublime.

I get a chill whenever I see that image of the three of us. It was so freakin' cold, and you were always out there without gloves or your ears covered. You were my hero out there!!!

Hey Doug and Marina, that was such a fun week...lots of awesome memories were made

That was a crazy winter with the GGO irruption up here, so many images were taken and processed that it all became a blur - so easy to lose track!

Hi Dan, what I would give to see one of these wonderful Owls - they look amazing. I just love that face, striking eyes, and that warm BG is tops. What an interesting shape to the perch. I wouldnt change a thing.

    Congrats on finding the card.

Fantastic forgotten image. Matching colors and textures on bird/perch/GB and golden light. Nice to see the three of you there.

Love everything about this image. The light, color palette, the pose, the Bg and the absolute best part is the frost on the feathers.
Killer image. Contest material I think.

Daniel, saw this on FB, love it. Perfect composition. I like the unusual orange BG. I wonder if you should have shot at f5.6 instead of F8 for a more blur BG and high SS. Loi

Late to the party (although not as late as you finding this!) so can only echo the above comments - great light + great subject = a winning frame.
