For years I've been staking out areas where Northern Harriers have been seen flying around. I often see them coursing low over the fields, but always at a distance. The only times they come close is when they sneak up behind me, and they're gone by the time I get the lens on them. Yesterday I was watching a handsome Grey Ghost at a great distance, when this female* came up from the opposite direction. I managed to get a few frames before she dove down into the marsh grass. Then I hid myself in the scrubby marsh, with a nice view of the area through which I thought she would pass once she emerged. But she failed to come back up during the time I waited, or else sneaked away without my seeing her. Although this is still not as close as I would like (this is cropped to 50% of full width), it is a bit closer than my previous encounters, and I liked the eye contact and wooded bg.
*I'm assuming this is an adult female, from the yellow eyes and the whitish spectacles among other things. But it could be a juvenile male, I suppose. If anyone has any thoughts, please let me know.
