    Default White-tailed kites

White-tailed kites photographed on CA coast on a very windy day. watching the colony and kite activity was fun, hand holding 1200mm in strong wind not so much! Recent rain had caused the rodents to surface and the raptors were ready to "clean up"

the lower bird is a juvenile the upper bird is an adult.

Shot with 1D-X and 600II + 2X III. ISO 1600. f/8 at 1/3200sec. Hand held. processed with DPP 4.3. I hope you like it

Excellent that you managed to get both birds in sharp focus. Nicely exposed in good light. Love the fanned out tail of the lower bird. The diagonal composition adds tension to the image.

Considering the challenges you faced with this shoot, I think the image came out well. I like knowing the adult is looking out for its young, following close behind. I like the fanned tail and open beak on the juvie.

Hi Ari, I like the excited flight pose of the Juvie, well exposed on him too. You have nailed the DOF on both, and I like how they both stand out against the darker BG. The adult with the red eye looks very similar to our black shouldered Kite.

Both stand out well against the dark BG. Well done on getting this at 1200.

Almost an impossible shot to accomplish yet you pulled it off. Your long lens technique combined with what must be a healthy dose of physical strength yields fine results. Love the compostion here.
