went to BW, added faded yellow flower on top of bw image of flower. Hand painted some of the yellow back in and a bit of green stalk. texture from bellafleur, The Emperor's New Clothes. Question, are the yellows too faded?

Given that you were going for a vintage look, I don't think the yellow is too faded at all. If this weren't supposed to evoke the feel of a vintage print, I'd opt for a bit stronger yellow but not all that much. The shape of the flower and its proximity to the right and bottom edges already add to the energy of the image. If you think it ought to be punched up a bit, you might try a soft yellowed version of a white print border. That would add a spark and retain the vintage look, I think.

The flower is well done, in composition and with the pale yellow petals. I was thinking the blackish bkgd is a bit harsh for the pale yellow. I wonder how just a hint of color would look? Maybe something in the pale browns/tans that could also be applied to the center of the flower? This reminds me of old photos of my mom & dad, that my mom applied pale watercolors to add color.

Lovely! The subtle painting makes it look authentically hand painted. I don't think the yellow is too pale. I understand what Nancy is saying about softening the bg. Might be interesting to try. I like all the action in the center of the flower!

I like the second version. Excellent choice of BG.

It looks like a little bit of the stem got lost, but I like what you did with the change in the background.

I also like the 2nd post better with that bkgd. More dynamic with the darker border and the lighter areas look nice against the yellows. Well done.
