This is the prequel to the shot I posted yesterday, several frames earlier. I was hunkered down in the snowbank on the edge of the lake, hoping the Mergansers on the open patch of water would drift into range, when I sensed some commotion off to my left. Several gulls were squabbling over a fish. I was able to swivel around and fire off a few frames just as this 1st winter Ring-billed Gull grabbed the prize and took off.
I love the motion in the running legs' positions and water splashing behind them. The snow looks good (although I am NOT looking forward to it!!). The action, light, and good view of the face with near wing nicely above it are strong enough in combination make me willing to forgive the gull speeding away from you.
