One very cool late afternoon in April of 2014 on the jetty at Barnegat, NJ this Herring Gull flew in quite close, virtually full frame, and proceeded to groom himself. C&C welcome.

    D3s, Nikon 500mm +1.4 TC, 1/800s, f 7.1, ISO 800, Gitzo tripod, Wimberley Gimbal head.

A perfect preening pose, with typical Barnegat mossy rock and water bg. Good exposure on the whites, and very nice comp. To my eye, you might be able to give the bird just a tiny bit more sharpening without overdoing it, and maybe a tiny bit more NR on the water.

    Hi Geoffrey,

Very nice pose and composition! I agree with Bill, sharpening the bird and NR to the water will make the bird pop more. You might consider to make the background have a little less contrast also.

I see what looks like a sensor dust spot in the water just between the head and the left edge of the frame. But at f/7.1 should we see dust spot on the sensor? Perhaps a processing mark?

Thanks Ross, and for pointing out the dust spot. Also Bill and Ross I'll go back and look at sharpening and NR.

I like the pose, slippery perch, BG and composition. Look forward to seeing the repost with the additional sharpening. Nice image Geoffrey.

Superb perch and I like the preening pose. Ditto the boys' critiques above.

Thanks everyone and for your recommendations. What an eye for seeing that sensor dust spot, Ross. I should have seen that. Here's a repost with another round of NR on the BG, and a bit more selective sharpening on the gull.

I had the same thoughts as the others when I first viewed this - the RP is a significant improvement
