The concept of virtual leg was mentioned in my "Two heads and four legs" thread. Here's another sandhill crane shot on a different day and different lighting. This time it's just one head and two legs ;)

    Fuji S5; 200-400 f4 VR @310mm f4; ISO 1600 1/1000 sec. Shutter priority mode, +2 compensation. No flash.

Doesn't look that truncated now, right?

I think the last one looks better...in some way :D

    Hi Desmond.
I like your composition. It has good details in the feathers and a very sharp eye;with a good head angle...I took the liberty in cropping your composition from the right of the frame, a tad from the top and a wee bit from the left. see if you like it...

Guess what, my original crop was kind of like yours :D:D The version that I'm showing is the one that I use as the desktop wall paper on my laptop, hence more space on the left.

    Hi Desmond,
Love this picture - prefer it with the crop - beautiful quality of light.

Virtual legs are fine Desmond Just imagine the legs in its entirety and see if there is enough room to the frame. It would be just like if they were showing. If the space is tight in virtual legs you want to leave more.

In some nesting situations is very easy to cut them off while making the images. Need to be careful

i'm guessing it's a matter of taste, but i think i would crop it somewhere between the original and gus'!! the bird looks great!

Nice bird - love the feather details - needs the crop but not sure were, as harold said - matter of taste.
