Default Cropping Question with a Stilt

Hi again! I'm trying to get a idea of how to crop an image to get that up close and personal view that James Shadle was talking about in one of my previous posts. I am referring to what I would consider a medium close-up. The head only (in this image) I would consider to be a full close-up. The size of the closeup, or the degree an image can be cropped in order to create a closeup without losing detail of course depends on the original image size, how close you were to the subject when photograph was taken, and the end use of the image. For example; for a web image you could crop quite a bit, and the distance from camera to subject wouldn't be that important For a magazine image, which usually ends up at 240 dpi, there would be less cropping possibility and you might need to have been closer to the subject, and of course the for a large print very little cropping might be possible, and the closeness of the camera to the subject would be critical. Lets say, for this discussion, I want a good 8"x10" print at at 300dpi, though 240dpi might work. I've included the image size of the digital photograph for this reason. The small image at the bottom I added to show the original before cropping. I chose a vertical orientation. I would like to hear opinions of what I should have done with the cropping, and how this relates to the resulting image size I had in mind. Suggestions on how the image itself could be improved by altering photographic techniques used or post-processing of course would be appreciated as well.

Hi William As presented I would like more room at the top and in front of the bird Do like the way you cropped the bird.

Processing wise would try obtaining more detail in the dark area and lighten the face some. Would pay particular attention to the head area. Can do some work around the eye. For printing you are much better leaving the image at the native resolution if is past 180. Would not look better by bumping up !!

Crop/quality size I do have some ideas. Small images I delete right away. No sense in keeping one that you think you can post but not good enough for selling. Anything I keep is a keeper. Will cut down the space in your HD and makes things easier at the end.
