I use the term loosely, I stalked the stag (with Barney - my dog, he was on a leash!), he was intent on keeping his eye on the harem and partly on us. I hoped and prayed for some interesting light..

Hi Jon - I think your prayers were answered by some interesting light. Nice big bull with good detail and dof for the entire head and rack to be sharp. My biggest issues is wanting a bit more room below but I'm guessing this is ff. If it were mine I would trim a bit off the top to eliminate the brighter bits of sky at the top of the frame. Good to see a different species. I might also lift the shadows slightly.

    TFS,
    Rachel

Hi Jon, you got the deer at the right moment and his racks are impressive, nice eye contact. I think the image could work had the light been less harsh. As is, the image has stage light/spot light effect. Loi

Hi Jon -- I liked this image ! especially the pose and the light . Agree with the suggestion made by Rachel to crop from the top in order to eliminate the sky and also some space at the bottom would have been nive but overall this is a very nice image . TFS !

    Hello Jon!

I like this very much and must agree with Loi regarding the "stage effect" - just wonderful.

Good placement of the subject in the frame, although I agree with Rachel, a tad at the bottom would benefit this greatly.

This deer is superb and the inclusion of environment makes it a very special frame, love the eye contact and proud pose - your prayers were answered Jon, that sparse light falls in all the right places - mmm...beautiful

    Kind regards,
    Gabriela Plesea

Hi Jon certainly a nice rack giving a great pose in a beam of sunlight through the somewhat looking dense forest .
I think you did well with the given light .
You got good suggestions regarding the crop by Rachel in which i agree .
I personally might have opened up the shadows a bit and lowered the overall contrast in the raw conversion , but this is just only a thought .The coors do look a bit to much on the magenta/blue side specially in the dark/shadow / 3/4 tone areas .
I tried to " correct " that in my RP and i changed the crop ; gave the HL a bit more tone and opened up the shadows a fraction ....... WDYT ?

    Cheers and TFS Andreas

Thanks very much everyone for your comments, I can look at re-cropping and or adding canvas to the base. Andreas I like your version very much it looks a little better colour and also cleaner and a tad sharper- I suspect if you had the raw file it would look pretty spectacular!! I noted to the blue cast here and there and tried to fix it though obviously not enough!
I have another very similar file but with a slightly better pose and I will take on board your comments and make a further submission once I think I am half decent at using Luminosity masks!!.

Here is my attempt at a rework, I have corrected the colour cast, adjusted the darker areas and fixed the sky at the top.

Hi Jon -- I would prefer the OP in terms of colors as well as the framing , yes a bit of crop eliminating the sky would have been better but not ideal to crop from LHS , lets see what others have to say .

Hi Jon - the shadows looks better. I too prefer the placement in the frame of the op and the colors of the op. The comp of the rp feels unbalanced to me. The rp seems much warmer and redder too.
