Lovely, for me this picture is better in light than the male picture.
Perfect that you catched the direct view !!!

I like the cleaner look to this one. Great light, small thin perch (although I do wish the extension beyond the head was either longer or not there at all). Nice clean image with some oof grasses sprinkled about to hint at the habitat. If you have a frame where the subject is looking towards our left that would be the winner IMO, especially with that light.

Hi David,
What attracts me most to your image in the quality of light, soft hues, and the simplicity of the background.
Because the bird's head is turned to the camera, you may consider that portrait orientation could work well as a basis for composition.
PS - I have the same gear as you used for this shot, and am quite impressed and surprised at the clarity of focus you achieved with the extender an f/8, assuming this was auto-focused? I had mixed results and slow auto-focus with the extender at f/8. I must revisit my extender again with this new lens and camera.
Thanks for posting this one David!

Thanks Eric and Daniel. Ross, thanks for your valued comments. I have not had any problems achieving sharp focus on perched birds using the 1.4 x extender. I try and use a shutter speed of 1/1000 or more and auto iso with a bit of exposure compensation if the bird is against the sky. I use BBF and AI Servo because small birds seem to be always moving some parts of their body, usually the head. I have not found the extender of any use on flying birds. I am no expert and there are many on this forum who are a lot more experienced than me who could give you more expert advice.

PPS. I use the smallest focus box, spot, and try to achieve focus on the head, not always that easy if the bird is moving a lot!!

Well focused and exposed, I like the pose and lighting. A very pleasing image. If it were mine I would remove the short stalk above the head.
