    Default Migration Mayhem

Hey everyone. I am back from 16 days of traipsing around the globe - starting off in the Mara for the Migration, then to Hong Kong (what a contrast!) and lastly to the Magoebaskloof forests of South Africa. I am back home and ready to get stuck into the images and stuck into the BPN critiques again.

Let's start off with this one - we had up to 11 epic crossings on our migration safari this year, more than other years for sure. Timing was just spot on - dust, chaos, mood - plus they seemed to like to cross in decent light (usually it can be prone to happen around midday).

    Techs:

    Nikon D3s
    Nikkor 70-200mm f2.8 VR-II @ 116mm
    f16 | 1/640 SS | ISO-900

    Very slight crop for rotation

Hi Morkel -- Glad to see you back and posting !! what a sight absolutely mayhem ! The feel is superb especially because of the emerging dust and the animals waiting in-line adds to this mayhem.enjoyed this image, the only glitch is the vehicle behind the zebras on the upper LHS corner. TFS !

Thanks Haseeb. Wanted to see if anyone notices it as I was hesitant to crop from the top and crop into the zebras.
I have others without the vehicle but the wildebeest diving positions are not as pleasing :)

O-La-La! It's AWESOME! I would so love to see this with my own eyes, Morkel!

Beautifully captured in wonderful light and I love the dust and the cascade of Wildebeest! Well processed and presented, stunning and engaging, congratulations!

PS. Pretty please would you take the vehicle out:) I have had to delete so many images because of the vehicles in Kruger and now I have developed a "vehicle in the frame phobia", LOL. Just kidding Morkel, it is very small I did not actually see it at first, only after reading Haseeb's comment:)

Have a wonderful evening, share some more!

Hi Morkel welcome back hope you had a great trip !!!
Really nice opener with the wider view , lots of stuff to look at and find something new/more with 3rd or 4th view . nice overall colors and lots of detail .
I just might temper the HL a bit more and give the dust clouds a bit more form , maybe ? Just my thoughts .
The car has to go !!!!!

    TFS Andreas

Hi Mork! Awesome opener and I can only imagine whats in store & to come from you. I love the image, great mood and drama typical of mara. Having been there I know how difficult it is to get the right spot and good light! We are at natures mercy here, and nature was kind to you here. Lots to look at and fathom. I have waited hours at some crossings only to see a small herd migrate at the end and some great crossings ( not as many as you though this time ) Thanks for sharing this, Agree the vehicle can be removed. Keep em coming !

    Thanks for your comments, folks.

I had another look tonight and found a crop that eliminates the vehicle without losing much of what I went for in the initial post.
I also tweaked the highlights some more (thanks Andreas!)

    thoughts now?

Hi Morkel - Welcome back! Great opener with lots to look at and explore. I think the dust really adds to the chaos of the scene and draws one in. I would be tempted to go somewhere in between the op and rp. Looking forward to more from your trip.

    TFS,
    Rachel

Hi Morkel, the image conveys the scene well and the light, dust & turmoil has a lovely 3D quality, nice one. Can't help but think that jeep may have spurred the crossing a little sooner.

Would suggest updating the RP as discussed .

    Cool image.

This was towards the end of a crossing that lasted nearly an hour... :) In general behaviour at the crossings was decent this year on that side of the river. On the Triangle side it's well controlled and abided by

Good to hear things are better controlled, it was obscene last time I was there and where people parked and how they conducted themselves, I hated it. Amazing how herds of 25-35+k can disappear so quickly.

Hi Morkel i like the RP for the more tonal depth but agree it does look a bit too much , but i have another option from my side ......

WDYT ? please do not forget the low res file as starting point so it could look a bit rough for others

Anyhow i still like this frame a lot and agree with Steve regarding the great 3D effect and i might have amplified it with my edit

    Cheers Andreas

    Hi Morkel

    All the techs covered above.
Glad the Game Viewer has passed..
Love the "pouring" effect this images conveys...
Would like to go there, one day...Have to choose between Mara and new D4S or off-road caravan...
    Regards

    Andre.
