Dave Salem and I got lucky finding this somewhat approachable female Belted King fisher. Caught her on a descent perch with our beautiful morning desert light. She was hunting dragonfly nymphs from a pond. D4, 600mm with 1.4tc, ISO 800, 1/3200 sec at F 5.6 Shot out of car window. Thanks for your comments, much appreciated.

OK. I am officially envious. Super subject, well exposed and sharp. The comp is a bit boxy to my eyes, I'd play with it and look for some other options. Did I say that I am envious? :)

Thanks Grace I have it cropped in landscape format and thought this was better, but not total sure. Wait till Dave posts some flight shots! We have waiting for this opportunity for a long time

Glenn, you hit a triple jackpot with this one. A typically very unapproachable bird, on a wonderful isolated perch, then processed so well. Congrats on a shot that truly inspires :)

For me the perch calls for vertical, the bird for horizontal framing. Hard to tell though, which would be better.
Love the sharpness, pose and light. While not the perfect HA, you would have been stoked!
Well done and thanks for sharing!

Great capture of this hard to approach bird. The background can not be any nicer than this.

Oh yes this is sweet. Great perch, luscious BG. I love the slick hairdo. Having the bird a tad higher in the frame (or more canvas below if you have it) would work well IMO. Very nicely done - not normally an easy bird to approach close enough for proper photography!

What a great opportunity we had with this beautiful female. Like you said, we have been waiting a long time for one of these. Doesn't get much better than this fantastic frame. Love this perch and that sweet BG. I removed the second catchlight in my shots. Lets see if she stays for a while, sure hope so. Great work buddy
