I have been trying for a while to get this shot ,it was taken just as the sun had dipped and the last bit of soft light was just hitting the lower half of the perch ,ideally I would have liked the bird to have landed 5 mins earlier but I was happy to have got the chance at all after trying for a while on the odd day we had some sun...Canon 1D MKIV 300MM at F4 ISO 800 +1/3 EV 1/125 SEC
The bird, the perch, the light, the background: all beautiful. Worth waiting for. I'm torn about the comp: move the bird to the left? or try a vertical? or square? The image proportions are unusual, but I think it works as posted and I'm not sure any of the alternatives would make it any better. See what others say.
Lovely catch, and sharp. But a bit thin for my tastes. I removed a bit of the empty space and punched it up a bit with curves, and a slight desaturation after the Curves.
It doesn't have a profile -- that will cause some people (combination of browsers and monitors) to see it incorrectly.
The soft backlighting really did look good here, and I can see why you were trying for that. Good overall, but I really like what Diane has done to punch up the image.
Hi Dennis, good eye contact here, and I wish I could wait for Owls at my favourite location. The plumage shows up well, and comp wise, just a personal thing, If going vertical, I would still come in more, or just have a traditional landscape crop. As is, a bit too 'square' for me, but remember thats just me.
