Hi folks after some time i like to post an Avian file ......
Went out yesterday to practice a bit after some time , before the brain and shutter finger becomes too rusty .
Image taken at local town lake .I was pleased with gorgeous light and cooperative subject , i like the intense colors and the warm evening light which makes this image for me .
Canon EOS 1Dx
Ef 500 IS L II + 1,4 TC
HH
F 5,6 ; Iso 1000 ; 1/16oo sec ; with hindsight for a tiny bit more DOF should have stopped down to F 7,1 or 8 .
Processed with DPP 4 and PS CC ; cropped for comp slightly
Thanks for watching and commenting to my last posting
Very nice Andreas. The lighting is beautiful. Lovely details and colours on the subject, which I think blend very well with the BG. I really like the eye. Very nice indeed.
"In your face" portrait, with a bit of an unconventional composition - but it works quite well IMO. Very vivid colours. I like the low angle, and water ripples in front of the subject. The piece of vegetation is a really neat element to the image (and I see there is some of it in the bill too, so it tells the feeding story). There is just a small dark oof spot I would remove in lower right corner...
I really like this one and it's way better than the thumbnail suggests. The detail is awesome and I love that rust color against the vivid blue water. The eye color is fantastic. Well done

Wow, yes, quite vivid with razor details that are perfectly sharpened. Personally, I think you nailed the dof. Beautiful image. Is this a native species in Germany?
Thanks folks for your kind comments , as always much appreciated .
As for the colors ............ no saturation added , just some tonal depth added and with it comes the color if the layers are not set to luminosity .
Shawn - they do live in Germany and breed here , not so good for the naturally living species , as they are so aggressive and chasing all other birds . My guess is that they started as being refugees from Zoos or private collections and they made their way very successfully .
But that´s how it is .The local authority tries to control them by removing the eggs and replace them with artificial ones , as it is not allowed to shoot them . The same is happening with the Canada Goose , too many of them around here. As most of our local lakes are small they cannot handle that many birds , but also the people who feed them cause a problem as the food source is easier to get rather than feeding on natural resources .
Exquisite details, colors and killer warm light. I love the bits of vegetation on the bill and the water surface.
I'm a hopeless photoshop amateur (clone, contrast, mask, shadow highlight and sharpen are about the only things I can manage). Do you have any pointers on "just some tonal depth added and with it comes the color if the layers are not set to luminosity"
What does this mean?

Hi Andreas, we have plenty of these guys around our wetlands, dams, and ponds, so I know your colours are spot on. Lovely light, and what great detail on the beak. I do like that we can see some veggies in the beak and in the water.
We have joke among our fellow togs that we shouldnt photgraph these guys as they are too 'common', but we all still sneak in the shots as they make great subjects, especially in flight. They make great fight images too, as they seem to be just as stroppy as Coots.
