I have to say I'm really struggling with these jaguar images in harsh light.

    5D3
    100-400 II @ 300mm
    1/1600
    f5.6
    ISO-1600
Aperture Priority +1/3 EV exposure compensation.

    In DPP4
    Reduce exposure by 1/3EV
    Reduce highlights by -1.0

    In PS,

Open up the mid tone on the face
    Reduce brightness on the rump

    Sharpen the Jaguar only.

I'd be happy to provide a RAW file for people who want to take a look at it. Please send me a PM.

    Thank you very much.

Hi Loi, a nice setting showing the environs and habitat well. I like the pose of the Jaguar with its tail up, raised front paw and fat belly. Agree the light was not in your favour but you did well. TFS.

Well this is not a frequent visitor - and how beautiful! It must have had a massive meal just before this! Not sure how you got this POV but it works well.

Sharpening on the animal was perhaps just a touch too much but it might be just me.

Hi Loi -- Huge fellow this Jaguar is though not well separated from the BG perhaps i can see you have chosen the most suitable DOF with the available lens . the belly looks blown out in parts may be selectively sharpening it might have escalated the same. A slight HA towards the camera would have helped but still you have managed to handle the lighting quite well . TFS !

Hi Loi , i already told you what i think about this and gave a direction how i see this from my POV interns of color and tone .
This fabulous Jaguar has the same focal issue as the previous one , the focus did lock on the plants just right to the head i the BG ( i had the fortune of having the Raw file available , thanks to Loi )

I like the trotting pose of this big guy captured in a lovely setting .

Hi Loi - Thanks for the RAW. I agree with Andreas about the FP being on the grass just to the right of the jaguar rather than on the jaguar. I processed the image in ACR and PS. I warmed the WB slightly and then used a radial filter to bring down the exposure and highlights of the habitat more than the jaguar. In PS I did levels and curves layers and selectively sharpened the jaguar. Btw I like the walking pose and elevated bank for the jaguar to walk in. It's always difficult shooting in bright light and from a moving boat makes it even harder.

    TFS,
    Rachel

Dear Rachel, I think you did a great job with this image. I need to learn the radial filter. I think the image despite being off focus still has potential, so I will work on it more. I looked at the colors of the jaguar and feel that the colors need to be less warm. The underbelly for example of a jaguar is very close to white. I will spend time again on this. But meanwhile, I did find some frames whether the jaguar in better focus, but the background is busy, will post some more soon.

Love what you did her with the grass, look very natural, so just have to look at the colors of the Jaguar.

Hi Loi - Again my condolences on the loss of your dad. If you need hints with the radial filter shoot me an email. I guessed on the color of the jaguar based on its cousin the leopard so obviously you would know better.
