Two of the four sandhill cranes in the water that day. They always showed up together. At one time they even landed about ten feet away from me.

Fuji S5, Nikon 70-300 VR f4.5-5.6 @ 300mm on tripod; f11, ISO 1600, 1/1000 sec. Shutter priority mode. No flash.

C&C welcome and will be appreciated !!

Desmond they travel and hang out in family groups !!! The babies stays with the parents through the first year !!!

As presented would like more room for the birds, particularly at the bottom. I like the fluff pose and feather detail !!! The four legged part looks realistic but need some lining up for the double header !!! :)

You've done a great job with the bird in the foreground. It's nice and sharp and the feathers all fluffed up like that look great. Personally, I'm not that bothered by the lack of space either at top or bottom. I'm not sure that the rear bird adds anything to the image though. I think I'd prefer to see a shot of a single bird (if that were possible) or to have some sight of the rear bird's eye.

I agree with Sean - I really love the fluffy bird in the foreground and am not bothered at all by the lack of space. I love the quality of light that the picture captures - beautiful!

    Nicki and Sean,

One of the reasons more room is being suggested at the bottom is for the "virtual feet" that are in the water and out of sight. Since most viewers know the relative size of the bird and how far the feet are extending into the water, leaving room on the bottom in situations like this help to balance the image and not make the bird's look truncated.

    Nicki,

You are very correct about the light and the look of the fluffy bird.

Thanks for the comments, folks! Thank you, Robert, for explaining the virtual feet. I totally had no idea about that :o
