I do not see this species in breeding plumage often up here very often (I had only seen 1 the past few years...but many, many juveniles). This individual is the third I photograph in the past few weeks. Maybe not earth-shattering news to most, but for me this is exciting opportunity to photograph this plumage locally :-). When I saw a small flock of plovers and sandpipers foraging in shallow waters with fresh green vegetation sprouting about I knew the opportunity was not to miss....but I did have to take a bath in the river to get closer and low, but well worth it.
Canon 7D + 500mm f/4 II + 1.4TC, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/2000s., f/5.6., ISO 800, natural light, handheld lying prone in the water, cropped for comp, lightened the shadow on the belly/throat.
Definitely worth getting wet for this, Dan. Lovely intimate view with beautiful water and BG. The fresh green growth adds a nice sense of the marginal habit.
The nice low shooting angle, the colorful scenery and the clean details make for a real keeper. Congrats on getting this beautiful adult.

Hi Dan, gotta love your dedication on getting low and dirty, and in this case probably wet too. Lovely soft light, and you managed to capture a good angled pose. Im glad you left the few blades of grass.
