Taken this summer at one of my fox cub sights,he popped his head up out of the rocks were he was born,to have a look at me and what I was doing, cannon 500mm IS,L,F4,TRIPOD,5D MK111,1/4EXT,700MM FL,crop,sharpened,CB,levels,iso1250,1/400S,f5.6.
I would try to reduce the brightness of the light tones on the rock.
A fine portrait otherwise, perhaps trying to squeeze more DOF would have been awesome.
Thanks for sharing
Hi Christopher -- lovely eye contact ! nice alert pose as well . i agree with the abv comment regarding taming down the whites on the rock . Also i feel sharpness can also be increased a bit more . TFS !
Hi Chris, like the peering POV, but for me it lacks the DoF as mentioned by Akos, how much of a crop? I feel for such a lovely portrait those eyes need to be 'crystal' clear, they are the real jewels, maybe the Blacks/Contrast are too dominant? I also feel even on a tripod, 1/400 is a tad low, crank the ISO up say 2500+, the camera can take it, no problem. I might even switch off the IS too, but if you get the opportunity try say f/9 at 1/1600+. Also look at the Case settings and adjust them to suit the scene, the presets are only suggestions.
Hi Chris a lovely portrait of the fox peeking out behind "his" rock .
I like the framing and the overall tones from the HL to the 3/4 tones , the blacks do look a bit heavy though .
Agree with the comments regarding DOF , where was the FP point ? You seem to have more sharpness on the nose / bridge of the same than on the eyes .
The overall color balance does also look a bit too much on the red /magenta side .Just my 2 cents .
Hi Christopher, a lovely image of this cute looking fox! I like the peering pose and the comp. Some nice advice coming your way by others.
Cheers,
Sanjeev
You have captured such a sweet look from this little one, inquisitive and shy and so adorable:) Love your little fox!
I take it the light was not quite favourable, relatively high ISO and F5.6, resulting in (I think) not-quite-enough SS for the size of your lens (500mm) and let us not forget you had a converter on. But you did use a tripod so maybe F7.1 would have made a difference in terms of DOF? Really hard for me to say " I would have done this and that" since I have no experience with Canon equipment, but if I were in your shoes and with my own "tools" I would have gone to ISO 2500 and F7.1 or more (to have more fox and a bit more rock too:) I do not like converters but I do admit I bought one some time ago, used it only when things were too far and some interesting action I did not want to miss. Just personal preference, I would rather crop than use a converter these days.
This is really sweet and I adore your little subject, the composition works well for me. In terms of colour I see a tad of magenta creeping in but in all honesty I have not checked. I would take another look at this lovely frame and maybe burn those white spots on the rock, or adjust exposure selectively.
Hi Chris - Nice peek-a-boo pose of the fox kit. Good suggestions above about more dof and taming the highlights on the rock. Nice bg though. Keep them coming.
Thankyou all for looking and comments,I should add that this shot was taken in haste, had not time to alter settings, the cub suddenly appeard quite close out of the rocks, and disappeared just as quick, thanks again.Steve, this is not a large crop,as for the IS, it was not on,I never have it on when on the tripod,or resting on beanbag, only when in low light and hand held. Thanks for looking and your comments.
Chris I have noted the comments above, I am very happy with the sharpness of the image and think the fur on the neck is about perfect, would be very pleased if it was mine.
