Looks like difficult conditions Ron but in my opinion it as worked well, very much like the light and the dark in the frame and the bird looks very good and natural with it's look back pose, nice work.
I am on the fence with this image.
The side lighting creates a nice dramatic mood.
I think the composition is not sitting well with me.
I would place the bird firmly in the RLC by cropping from the bottom ( thus getting rid of some ofthe OOF log) and cropping from the LHS.
If you have some room up top I would add that back in.
It is unfortunate that the bill is merged with the log but not a deal breaker for me.
Finally I would clone out the little bit of white wash that lies about 3 in to the left of bird's bill.
This image is a good learning exercise about positioning yourself ( in this case moving to your left would have eliminated the bill merge and gotten rid of the vertical branches) and framing the image in camera by moving your focus point to RLC.
Gail
I would also clone out the vertical in LUC and replace it with the nice green water.
Thanks for your very helpful critique, Gail. I was more interested in a fishing osprey family at the time, but more effort into framing this shot would have paid off, as the osprey stayed too far away. Here's a repost
