Photographed yesterday under heavy overcast skies in Western New York. These guys are not very common on my stomping ground and since I have been skunked on all the Winter finches and pine grosbeaks which have irrupted in these parts I was happy to get this guy. Techs: Canon 20D , 400 f5.6L ,partial metering ,ISO 400, 1/80 sec at f5.6 , -1/3 EC, 430EX Flash /BB ,FEC -2 Cropped from horizontal and cloned small flash dot out of eye. C/C much appreciated

Hi Tim Glad you found the little guy !!! Got him at a good level up the tree Sharp as you can make it at the low ss I think you could have use more light? For an overcast day you will be adding light to the meter reading most of the time -1/3 seems would underexpose and the bird looks a little dark

Might also suggest to crop both left an right to make it into more of a pano for effect

Very nice shot. This is the first year that we have had these little guys in our yard too. I love the colors on the bird but the OOF trunk on the right is a little distracting. But I would be very happy with shot and would hang it on my wall

Nice pose and BG. I like these little nuthatches. I agree with Al's cropping suggestion. If you had moved a bit to the left you might have been able to see both legs.
